Special Markings I'm all about mixing things up. My work is pretty thick with layers: physically and metaphorically. I incorporate a wide variety of textures, materials, and personal symbolism into my paintings.

Passion I would say I'm passionate about little things. I go wild over fields of dandelions and snuggly quilts. Also, I'm consumed by stories- the consuming and creating of stories, visually, verbally, and written.
Role model(s) I would say my favorite role model is David Williams, a friend and ex-coworker who steered me in the direction of gallery work. But also, as artists and creative people in general, I admire the work of folks like Tim Burton, Basquiat, the Clayton Brothers, Robert Rauscheberg, Camille Rose Garcia, James Rosenquist, Bask, and Dr. Suess.
How did you get to where you are? Hmm. As a kid I was a nerd and did nothing but paint, draw, and read. This led to art school (Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL), which led to my internships and my current job, at American Greetings in Cleveland, Ohio. The illustration and design that I do at AG is pretty conservative, so I started doing the personal work out of need for an outlet.
How long have you been working in the design industry? 3 years or so...since i graduated in 2001.
Why do you do what you do? I can't imagine not painting. I had to go half a year without painting when i first moved to Cleveland because of my living situation, and I was miserable. Art and creating things is such a huge part of my life, i think without it I'd pretty much just shrivel up.
Why is it important to you? I'm an over-emoter. I think without someplace to put all of that energy, I would not ever have a moments peace. Painting is a process for me that lets me get whats going on in my head out. Its like dreaming...cataloging events, memories, ideas, even questions. It enables me to turn myself inside out, and I find that I need that or my insides get too squished.
What kind of projects/shows have you been involved in? I mostly show with 1300 Gallery here in Cleveland, and Pr1mary Space in Detroit, MI. I have also shown with Objex artspace in florida, Imperio Media Gallery and Muse Gallery in San Diego, and at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota. I do group shows and solo shows, and I've done some curating. My next big show is a solo show with 1300 in August of this year. |
